To be careful and/or conscientious in one’s work or duties.

 Synonyms – industrious, hard-working, assiduous, meticulous, painstaking.

 1. His range of reading was extensive, and he was a most diligent student.

 2. After a diligent  search no trace of the contact lenses could be found.
